Is it possible a whole year has already passed since my
Yep...afraid so.
Some time ago one of my knitting buddies
was complaining about being called "sweetie"
by suddenly lots of people.
She was hearing it from sales clerks,
the people at the bank,
nurses at the doctor's office,
even the "child" behind the counter at McDonald's.
At the time I didn't really "get" what she was
complaining about, thinking,
"it's just a Southern thing."
However,
I find it happening to me now...
...and I get it.
As I hear people addressing me as "sweetie,"
I'm hearing a tone of condescension in it.
I'm getting a feeling of being sized up
because of my age,
being put in my place.
("Oh, it's that older lady....
let's move her along and on her way...)
Am I being overly sensitive?
Maybe.
However,
just remember the years I have behind me mean
I've been to a lot of places,
met a lot of people,
done a lot of different things.
I've seen a lot of trends come and go,
made a boatload of mistakes and
learned a lot of lessons.
So, you can call me
Miss, Ms, Madam or even Susan.
Just don't call me sweetie.
A while ago a friend sent me a humorous email
I tucked away thinking it would be the
perfect thing to share on my birthday.
Think of it as "my" birthday card to you!
Maybe.

Where does the time go?
Remember yesterday,
and dream about tomorrow.
But live for today because...
the years pass quickly!
Have a special day!

I call everybody sweetie...old and young alike but have never thought, in a million years, about calling someone that because I thought of him/her as being old! Goodness.
I did have to laugh at your birthday card. That is too funny! Yes, we all get there sooner or later, don't we? I pray you have a blessed and wonderful birthday!
LOL- Great post. Oh- No- Sweetie? I say that to people all the time..but they are always YOUNGER than me!
Happy, Happy Birthday- xo Diana
Happy Belated Birthday, Susan!!!! Oh, girl!! It does pass so quickly!! And, when I look in the mirror, I just don't feel like that woman looking back... I'm sure I should still be in that middle age group of photos!! LOL! blessings and wishes for the best year ever!! tanna
Hi Susan,
Loved the card! Yes yes isn't it fun dealing with the young people who think they know it all and are better at it! For years I worked in a school where we were all pretty much the same age. My peers started retireing and I am one of the three older people who are left. The younger teachers are just plain rude! This year I had one of the "kids" tell me that we all needed to retire and let them do it.

ROFL! Great post. Happy birthday!!
Oh Susan- the card is hilarious--- I'm sorry I missed your big day-- but Happy Belated birthday anyway.
I'm 54-- and I get called "sweetie" a lot by store clerks. Mostly--- I hate it!
